British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
